Joint Beam and Polarization Forming of Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces for Wireless Communications

In this paper, we propose a novel intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) structure, which is capable of jointly forming desirable beam and polarization reflected wave with the aid massive elements. More specifically, proposed IRS composed unit cells, each having multiple variable capacitors. Active tuning capacitances capacitors in cell provides full coverage 360° reflection phase. Furthermore, switched from an incident to through excitation two orthogonal modes, enabling arbitrary phase distribution over for desired polarization. As result, allows increase signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at receiver communication scenario, by adjusting shift element. Moreover, shifts element are optimized Newton method, such that received signal power maximized. our simulations, it demonstrated successfully maximizes SNR receiver, both single-user broadcast multi-user scenarios, where interference absent.
